Rhum Clément taps biotech company Kadalys for Bana Canne liqueur

Bana Canne is a new liqueur from Martinique-based Rhum Clément. The product leverages an eco-extraction technique developed with skincare brand Kadalys to use bananas that would otherwise go to waste.

Rhum Clément’s Bana Canne liqueur is described as a celebration of Martinique’s two main agricultural trades: sugarcane and bananas. It is made from bananas grown at Habitation Clément. During quality control, approximately 20% of the banana harvest is rejected, with this waste destined for compost or local pig farmers.

For Bana Canne, Rhum Clément developed an eco-extraction process with biotech company and skincare brand Kadalys to cut down on organic waste from banana production. Close to 50 trials were carried out before arriving at the eco-extraction technique that resulted in the Bana Canne recipe.  “Capturing the rich, nuanced banana flavors present in Bana Canne was a challenging and intricate task,” Kadalys Founder Shirley Billot commented in a statement.
